Minecraft is one of the most popular video games in the world. While the vanilla version of the game is perfectly fine, some players feel like the game could be improved through mods. There are plenty of mods players must try in Minecraft and among them are some quality of life mods that significantly improve the game while leaving its core mechanics untouched.

These quality of life improvements make the Minecraft experience as smooth as possible and eliminate those little pet peeves players have with the vanilla game. All mods on this list are compatible with the latest version of the game.

Updated August 10, 2022 by Jacqueline Zalace: The modding community is always hard at work, creating new Minecraft mods. We’ve updated this guide with even more QoL mods to make your gaming experience smoother.

15 OptiFine

The OptiFine mod is a great way to optimize Minecraft. There are many things you should know about the OptiFine mod, but it’s a worthwhile download for any Minecraft player. Even if you don’t like mods in general, it’s still a very useful one to have.

Most players will immediately notice a framerate boost, leading to a smoother experience. You also get many more options with OptiFine installed, including dynamic lights and a variable render distance among others. If you want the optimal Minecraft experience, then you want OptiFine.

14 Just Enough Items

Just Enough Items, also known as JEI, is an item and recipe viewing mod. It allows you to take a look at every item in the game and how to craft them. Considering recipes only unlock once you have the necessary materials to craft them, JEI is a necessary mod for many players.

If you need specific blocks for a build, JEI will help you figure out what’s needed to complete your project. It’s much more efficient than having to look it up yourself outside of the game. Once you install JEI, you won’t ever want to uninstall it.

13 JourneyMap

JourneyMap is a navigation mod that maps your Minecraft world as you explore. It adds a minimap in the corner of your screen that displays your current coordinates underneath it.

The map updates in real-time so you can’t just take a look at it to figure out where everything is. You’ll still have to venture out there and discover your Minecraft world for yourself, but you won’t have to rely on in-game maps anymore. If you constantly find yourself getting lost, then this is the perfect mod for you.

12 AppleSkin

AppleSkin is a useful mod that improves the hotbar at the bottom of the screen. AppleSkin gives you additional information about food, including how many hunger points and how much saturation they restore. It’s all information you can’t see in the base Minecraft game.

The mod also adds plenty of new visualizations in the hotbar to show saturation, exhaustion, potential hunger restored, and potential health restored. AppleSkin is one of those mods loaded with features that should be in the vanilla game, making it a great addition to Minecraft.

11 Waystones

For those of you who want to add fast travel to Minecraft, you could do so through the Waystones mod. It’s a feature that is lacking in Minecraft despite being present in most open world games. You can craft your own waystone with the right materials. Once two waystones are created, you could fast travel from one to the other.

If you’re not near a waystone, but desperately need to fast travel, you can do so by using a Warp Scroll or a rechargeable Warp Stone. Both of these items are added to the game through the mod.

10 Nature’s Compass

Nature’s Compass is a useful mod for players searching for a specific biome. To craft it, all you need is four pieces of wood, four saplings and one compass. With nature’s compass in hand, simply right click to bring up the GUI. Through the GUI, you can set which biome you want the compass to point toward.

Nature’s compass also gives you some information on each biome, including the names of every biome, what the top block is, and the precipitation of the area. It’s very useful if you need to find a specific biome for certain resources.

9 Timber Mod

The Timber Mod will make it as easy as possible to get wood planks from all kinds of different trees. This mod makes entire trees fall over by hitting the lowest block, dropping all the wood immediately. It’ll make it so easy to farm wood that you’ll never want to go back to vanilla Minecraft again.

To use the mod, all you have to do is press the V button on your keyboard with an axe in your hand. Just don’t forget to yell “timber” as you collect all the fallen wood.

8 Fast Leaf Decay

If you ever get frustrated that the leaves of the tree you just cut down don’t go away immediately, you’re not alone. To solve this problem, download the Fast Leaf Decay mod. This mod makes leaves decay a second or two after a tree is taken down.

Now you won’t have to deal with those pesky floating leaves that don’t seem to decay no matter how long you wait. You can cut down trees without having to worry about the leaves afterward. Some peace of mind is never a bad thing.

7 KleeSlabs

Slabs are a very useful block in Minecraft, but many players feel like they’re not as optimized as they could be. When you stack two slabs on top of each other and break it, you get one solid block, which could be annoying sometimes.

With the KleeSlabs mod, you only break off the slab you’re looking at so you get a single slab in return and not a full block. It could allow you to come up with some creative builds and not lose the slabs you’ve created.

6 NetherPortalFix

There are many things you should do once you enter the Nether, but just getting in and out of there could be a problem. Sometimes, when you go through a Nether portal to come back into the Overworld, you’ll end up in a completely different place. Thankfully, with the NetherPortalFix mod, you’ll never have to worry about that again.

With this mod installed, you’ll always return through the same portal you entered so you don’t have to deal with any Nether portal shenanigans anymore. It’s a small tweak that makes a world of difference.

5 Corail Tombstone

Have you ever died in Minecraft and ended up losing all of your items? With the Corail Tombstone mod, this will never happen again. This mod creates a tombstone upon death, which holds all of your items.

This allows you to make your way back to your tombstone without worrying about your items despawning, especially if you are playing on a server with others. With this mod, you can also place decorative graves and have the chance to see a Grave Guardian, who guards the area around grave sites.

There are dozens of blocks and items in Minecraft, so it’s only natural that you may not know them all. Rather than searching for an answer, you can download the WTHIT mod, which stands for ‘what the hell is that?’.

This mod will display the name of whatever you aim at, even if it is modded content. With WTHIT, you can hover over noteblocks and composters to see their current state as well. If you want to know exactly what is going on in the world around you, then this mod is perfect.

3 Simple Voice Chat

Minecraft does not have a built-in voice chat, which means that if you don’t have a mod to do so, you will probably end up talking with other players on Discord. If you want to take your voice chat to the next level, then the Simple Voice Chat mod is the way to go.

This mod allows you to have group chats with players directly in Minecraft, as well as the ability to use proximity chat. Proximity chat is essentially how talking works in real life. When a player is next to you, their voice is loud and clear; when they start to walk away though, their voice becomes quieter. This allows you to talk with others and have short conversations as you pass by.

2 Easier Sleeping

If you play Minecraft alone, you can lay in a bed to sleep and instantly skip the night. Unfortunately, this doesn’t hold true if you are playing on a server with others. Without mods, every person online will need to sleep. This can be a hassle, especially if there are a lot of people on the server.

The Easier Sleeping mod will skip the night if a certain percentage of players sleep, rather than all of them. The percentage of players needed can be changed as well, allowing you to customize your sleep.

1 Villagers Leashed!

We all know that dealing with villagers is one of the most frustrating things in Minecraft. With the Leashed mod, you will be able to use a diamond lead on every mob in the game, including villagers, allowing for easy transport.

If you’re feeling dangerous, you can also use the diamond lead on mobs like the Wither. Overall, this is a simple mod; all you need is eight diamonds and one normal lead to make the diamond version.
