This guide is based on early access content and might be subject to change in the future.
Updated October 4, 2022: We’ve updated this article to include a helpful video guide that shows you how to fish in Disney Dreamlight Valley.
How To Get The Fishing Rod
Goofy very much enjoys fishing, it’s what he does most of the time that he’s wandering around the Valley. You’ll have to talk to him to get the fishing rod. The fishing rod is one of the Royal Tools that you’ll have to collect but in order to get it you’ll have to find Goofy’s lucky fishing rod first.
Goofy’s lucky fishing rod can be found south of Goofy’s stall, right next to the path that leads to the small pond. Pick it up and bring it to Goofy. Although it appears to be broken, he’ll notice that it’s simply jammed up with seaweed.
Since he’s got his lucky fishing rod back, he won’t need the one that he found anymore – so, he’ll give it to you. This is the fishing rod that belonged to the Old Ruler.
How To Fish
When compared to Stardew Valley, fishing in Disney Dreamlight Valley is piece of cake. It’s definitely a much more laid-back and relaxing experience. Not to mention that it’s a magical fishing rod so it always has bait! This is how fishing works in Disney Dreamlight Valley:
- First, you’ll want to find a location with ripples, this is where the fish are hiding
- Once you’ve found the perfect spot, open your tool wheel and select the fishing rod icon
- Cast a line by pressing and holding down the ‘fish’ button – holding it down longer will allow you to cast your line farther
- Then, as soon as a fish bites down, press the ‘select’ button
- Now there’s a mini-game you’ll have to play. Keep pressing the select button once the larger circle reaches the smaller white circle. Do this until you’ve caught a fish
If you don’t aim at the ripples with your fishing rod, you’ll catch seaweed.
New Dreamlight Duties and event Duties are always coming out and rotating. Be sure to check them out since there might be some fishing-related activities. There are also Fishing Dreamlight rewards for you to complete, these will have to selling multiple fish and catching them in various places around the Valley.

While in-game you can always open up the game’s menu and visit the Collection section, there you can also see a complete list of all the fish available. Once you’ve caught a fish, it will no longer be greyed out and will appear in full color. You might want to try completing the Fish collecting once you’ve visited the entire Valley.
It’s important to consider which fish are worth selling and which ones are worth keeping for cooking or eating right away. For example, since Seaweed and Bass are worth nearly the exact same but the Bass has a much higher energy value, it might be worth keeping the Seaweed for selling and eating the Bass when you’re running low on energy.
How To Unlock Moana’s Fishing Boat
Moana is one of the first characters you can unlock in Disney Dreamlight Valley. Once you remove the large thorns at its entrance and gain access to the castle, you can finally enter character realms and bring them back to the Valley. This is exactly how you unlock Moana – you visit Moana’s realm, help her and Maui and then bring her back with you after placing down her house.
As soon as you get Moana back to the Valley, you can talk to her straight away and she’ll already have a quest for you – no need to increase your friendship level. She’s seen a broken-down boat on the beach that can easily be fixed. After this interaction, you’ll initiate the “Fixing The Boat” quest. Moana needs your help collecting materials to fix the boat, this is what you’ll need to gather 50 softwood, 70 fibers, and three pink hydrangeas
Softwood can be found pretty much everywhere in the Meadow and in the Plaza since there are trees and bushes all over the place. Fiber is made from seaweeds, one seaweed can be turned into five fibers – you might have to grind by fishing while avoiding the ripples since these will always grant you fish (unfortunately you’ll still come across some bass while fishing without aiming at the ripples.) And, lastly, pink hydrangeas are scattered all over Dazzle Beach.
Once you’ve gotten all of the necessary ingredients, access a crafting station and craft three rustic wooden cases, three baskets, and four ropes. Give everything to Moana and she’ll have the boat fixed and turned into a fishing boat in no time. This allows Moana to go out to sea and collect fish from time to time.
You can upgrade the boat three times using the Scrooge McDuck sign next to it, once for 1,000 Star coins, then for 2,000 Star coins, and lastly for 3,500 Star coins. This will greatly improve its efficiency, meaning she’ll catch more fish, she’ll turn it in more often, and it’ll be rarer fish than before.
